Getting up close with the Scotmid board and committee members continues with Pat Devenney, Scotmid Board and West Regional Committee member.
Why (and how long ago) did you become a member of Scotmid?
I became a member 1975 because I believe in the co-operative principles.
“The Store”, as it was known then, was the only shop in the town selling food, clothing, butchery, furniture, electrical, coal and all sorts. That was back in the days of 3 shillings in the pound dividend!
How and why did you decide to become more actively involved?
I strongly believe that the Principles of The Co-operative Movement are as relevant today as they were in 1844.
What major changes have you seen in your time with Scotmid?
From counter service to the present day – self-service was introduced in the early 60’s
What’s been your proudest moment at Scotmid?
As part of the integration team that brought electronic point of sale and scanning to Scotmid and also introduced Morning, Noon and Night to Scotmid and to co-operative movement.
What encouragement would you give to Scotmid members who are looking to become more involved with the Society?
All members should take the opportunity to attend members meetings, get involved and find what the Society is all about. Logging on to the Society’s website is also a good way to see what is going on at Scotmid e.g. community involvement.
If there’s one thing you can’t pass by on your local Scotmid shelves, what is it?
The Fruit & Veg and Bakery normally make me purchase something!
What do you do to relax?
I support football and regularly attend matches. I also enjoy watching most sports on TV especially football and speedway.
What’s been your favourite holiday destination and why?
The North West of Ireland. The pace of life and the friendliness of the people cannot be beaten and I have relations and friends there from my childhood.
